1. Tell me about the different ways that you used communication for 24 hours in your journal.
Diana – Checked email, learned (in class), talked to friends, listened to music and watched TV.
Paulina - Used it to communicate with friends and family about current events and activities. Also, I used e-mail to confirm sent/received data.
Colin – Throughout the day I used cell phones, the internet and Television as the main forms of communication technology
Marie – My alarm clock was used as a one way communication for myself as I set it to wake me up in the morning. The other communication media I used were an incoming call on my mom’s cell phone, chatting through instant messaging, and checking and replying emails on my hotmail and SFU email accounts.
Lawrence – I used it to communicate, socialize, stay connected to the world, relax, fall asleep/wake up.
Priscilla – Laptop – Internet – Check emails, check bus schedule, look up camera manual, look up course information on WebCT
Labtop – Offline Usage – Transferring files from camera to computer
Cell Phone – Making and receiving call, Alarm clock, Storing memo
2. What was the most common communication media that you used in 24 hours?
Diana - My Cellphone
Paulina - Cell Phone
Colin - The internet was the most commonly used technology
Marie - The most common communication method that I used in 24 hours is the Windows Live Messenger for instant messaging. I used it to chat online with my friends.
Lawrence – Internet
Priscilla - Laptop and cell phone because they are multi-functional
3. What was the most common purpose for the communication media you used?
Diana - To text/talk to friends
Paulina – Receiving and Sending SMS
Colin – To research for school
Marie - The most common purpose was to talk to people I know or my friends either asynchronously or synchronously.
Lawrence – Relaxation
Priscilla - Look up information for my daily activities
4. What do you think you learned most about the role of communication media in your everyday life by keeping this journal?
Diana – That I would be very lost without them. I wouldn’t be able to meet up or find any of my friends since it would be really hard to find anyone without using communication media to tell them beforehand when and where to meet.
Paulina – That by using a cell phone I was able to keep connected with family and friends when I was away from home and any other communicational device. However, if I did not have my cell phone with me, I would have a lot of difficulties communicating with people that were essential in my plans for that day.
Colin - That technology rules our lives to one extent or another
Marie - I learned that I do not actually need a cell phone nor do I need to be logged into an instant messenger for the whole day. However, when I am home, I tend to want to use the computer and be logged into Windows Live messenger to talk to my friends and to check my email accounts even if I do not need to.
Lawrence - It is an integral part of my life as it is needed for almost every activity I do. The majority of my day is spent using or interacting with communication technology.
Priscilla – I learned that I am dependent on these forms of media to provide me with information and instructions on what to do. It forms the to-do list of my everyday life.
5. What was the most surprising thing that you learned from keeping this journal?
Diana - That I sent 24 text messages that day!
Paulina - I send and receive a lot of text messages in a span of 24 hours.
Colin – How long in the day that I used the internet
Marie – I think the most surprising thing I learned in this journal was that I survived without using many communication media!
Lawrence – I use technology to relax more than I thought. Also, I interact with communication technology for even trivial things like the electronic sign on Skytrain stations.
Priscilla – I am surprised that I do not use a lot of communication media in my daily life. One form of technology already covers a large range of activities.
6. What are some of the positive implications about having communication media in your life?
Diana – They keep you connected with your friends as well as any important information to do with school (email, webct). They also give you something to do with your spare time.
Paulina – By using a cell phone I am able to communicate to anyone that I have a phone number or an e-mail to, wherever I may be (where there is service).
Colin - It allows for instantaneous transfer of information whether it be one or two way media
Marie – Communication media is very helpful in quickly getting messages across to my friends.
Lawrence - It helps us stay connected with the world and know about world events. It also helps us in our daily routine and aids us in gaining vast amounts of information.
Priscilla – The devices enhances my ability to store information, I am able to keep memories stored in a device rather than in my brain.
7. What are some of the negative implications about having communication media in your life?
Diana - They are distracting and make you lazy
Paulina - I would feel lost, isolated and disconnected without my cell phone.
Colin - They bind you to obligations and work, restricting any freedom you had when alienated.
Marie – Communication media can get you hooked on to it, and thus, wasting a lot of time using it rather than doing something else. Furthermore, using it all the time is not absolutely necessary.
Lawrence – We begin to rely on technology too much and begin to become lazy.
Priscilla – I become reliant on a particular device, for example, without my cell phone I will wake up late and be late to my day’s activities.
8. How do you think your life would be if you did not have access to communication media; please talk about both the positive and the negative things that might happen.
Diana - I would be less distracted in class, or at home when I should be doing homework. I would also find something more useful to do with my time rather than spending hours on the internet. Negatively, I would be completely lost and be unable to find anyone or get help from anyone if I needed it. I would also be bored without music or television.
Paulina – The positives of not having access to communicational media would be that I wouldn’t feel attached to an object as if it was a second skin. I also wouldn’t have an obsession of checking my e-mail/phone/television/internet to see if any irrelevant information has changed or if someone contacted me.
Colin - I would ultimately benefit from a lack of communication technology. Since school demands the use of online communication there would be inevitable fallouts. But such a case is trivial. The roles of television and cell phones are not necessary in living a full life. Without them, I would still have means of entertaining myself and anticipating and preparing ahead of time for things to come.
Marie - I think my life would change drastically if I did not have any access to communication media. I don’t consider myself a ‘phone person’ at all, and I feel more comfortable talking in an online environment where it is quick, effective, and easy to use. I do not have to use my voice or let others see me, but rather hide behind my computer monitor typing away. However, sometimes I feel more comfortable talking on the phone rather than face-to-face communication too. I do not know exactly what my life would be without communication media. I could become more timid or learn how to face and talk to other people, but it is all uncertain. Furthermore, without communication media, I would probably be studying in another field in university, since it is technology and how we communicate with it that attracted me to the Interactive Arts and Technology program.
Lawrence – We would probably not be able to lead our daily lives. Basic skills like talking with a person face to face or simply waking up naturally without an alarm clock are degraded with communication technology. Without technology, all the natural skills will be regained and we can spend more time with other people.
Priscilla - If I had no access to communication media, I would have to use my brain to keep information and remember things. However, my brain may not be as reliable, because I have a bad memory. On the other hand, I will be training my brain to be able to retain and remember more things.
9. If you had to choose one communication media to take on a desert island, which one would you choose and why?
Diana - Computer/Internet because it would keep me connected to everyone else in the world and has access to music, and tv shows as well.
Paulina – I would choose a cell phone because I could then call someone to pick me up or send signals with my phone for people to find me with.
Colin - Industrial Radio with 1000 km range w/ batteries. Most reliable source of contacting the outside world to know where I was.
Marie - I would choose instant messaging because it is the most familiar and comfortable communication media to me. Messages are mostly asynchronous making it quick and easy to use.
Lawrence -Laptop – it can act as an alarm clock, phone, radio.
Priscilla - I would take my laptop because it is multi-purpose. I can use it to communicate with others and to entertain myself.
Our Detailed Plan

What were the most difficult parts of the mission?
The main difficulty was making sure the actual guest speakers were the recipients of the mail, packages, and fax. In addition, having the speakers successfully send back a confirmation, signature, and finger print through the media that they received in the first place would be problematic. Another difficulty we encountered was the potential delay and cancellation of flights. This was resolved by having the speakers come and stay for two weeks before the conference, so they will be able to prepare themselves for the big day and also get used to time difference. Furthermore, if flights are delayed or cancelled, we would be able to rebook the flights within 4 days through the same travel agent we used previously. Overall, the limited communication media was the challenging factor. Especially, not having the phone, we lose real time communication which helps us confirm the bookings and attendance quickly and efficiently.
Which communication media would be most missed in the world and why?
The phone would be most missed because it is a synchronous two way communication media. Phones have been used for a long time, and are proven to be quick and easy to use. Since it is in real-time, we can hear the speaker’s voice and be able to verify if in fact we are talking to the right person, making the phone a reliable resource. In addition, if a person is not available at the time, we are able to leave a voice message provided that they have an answering machine. Finally, a phone is a more personal means of communication as people’s tone of voice can be conveyed and heard.
What are the expenses for the planning and coordination of this conference? (you do not need to worry about venue expenses, food, or any other details aside from the planning requirements listed above).
